Discussion on future perspectives in times of crisis by world-renowned experts in economics from the USA and Israel

On 20 June, Monday, 6 pm

A discussion titled Economic transformation – reflections from Israel, the world and thoughts for Lithuania between experts from the USA and Israel Prof. Avishay Braverman, Prof. David Zilberman, and Yishai Ashlag will take place at the National Gallery of Art in Vilnius.

The world is in the worst political and economic crisis in decades. This turmoil is due to the war in Ukraine, the COVID pandemic, the political instability in many countries, and more.

The speakers will reflect on the possible implications and opportunities of this ongoing crisis for an economic development strategy for Lithuania, borrowing relevant experience from another small country, Israel, and lessons from the changes in the pattern and structure of the global economy.

 

Prof. Avishay Braverman received his PhD in Economics from Stanford University and served for 14 years as a Senior Economist and Division Chief at the World Bank. He led research and initiated policies and programs emphasizing economic development with social justice, implemented in South America, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

 

During these years, he published numerous articles and edited several books dealing with topics related to development economics, agricultural economics, industrial organization, public policy and resource and water resource management.

 

Professor Braverman is the laureate of the 2020 Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement – a special contribution to society and state – awarded for his contributions as President of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, leading the transformation of the University, the city of Beersheba and the Negev region surrounding it.

 

He is a winner of numerous prizes and awards, including:

  • Membership in the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. The European academy bestowed upon him in November 2017, the Ring of Tolerance for his life work in Academia and Politics with Jews and Arabs, Muslims and Christians, in Israel and beyond.
  • Commander of the French Order of Academic Palms.
  • Honorary Doctorate from the Jewish Theological Seminary
  • Honorary Doctorate from Rand Afrikaans University
  • Honorary citizen of Beer-Sheva.
  • Ben-Gurion Prize
  • Quality in Government Prize in the State of Israel

 

Prof. Braverman is currently advancing economic and social projects. He is also advising and lecturing worldwide on issues pertaining to his broad Israeli and international expertise.

 

Prof. David Zilberman holds the Robinson Chair in the Agricultural and Resource Economics Department, University of California at Berkeley. He is the recipient of the 2019 Wolf Prize in Agriculture and was elected a member of the U.S. National Academy of Science 2019. David served as the 2018-19 President of the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA). He is a Fellow of the AAEA, Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, and Honorary Life Member of the International Association of Agricultural Economists. David has published in both professional and popular outlets. He has more than 350 refereed articles in journals ranging from Science to ARE-Update and has edited 20 books. In addition, he has served as a Consultant to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the World Bank, and FAO.

 

David has a BA from Tel Aviv university and a PhD from Berkeley.

 

David’s research analyzes water, innovation, supply chain and the interactions between agriculture, energy, and the environment. He has researched the economics and political economy of agricultural biotechnology and the potential of the bioeconomy. In addition, he has been working on water policy programs and the economic impacts of the COVID pandemic.

 

Yishai Ashlag is an entrepreneur and an expert in the Theory of Constraints. Currently, he is a senior partner at Goldratt Consulting and the founder of One Beat, a retail tech startup. Yishai holds a PhD in economics from Bar Ilan University. Upon graduation, he was a visiting scholar at the Wharton School of Business. Yishai has published four books. His last book, THE NOISE FACTOR, was released in 2021.
