They Live Among Us

Antanas Žmuidzinavičius (1876–1966) Grief (Remorse). 1906. Oil on canvas. Lithuanian National Museum of Art

The world never reveals itself to us in full. Beyond the limits of what we can perceive and explain lies territory that is not ours. There, things unfold that exceed our understanding, yet which we can sense; things that attract and unsettle us. Crossing this boundary is dangerous, for on the other side lie the dwellings of other beings. Fairies, witches, nymphs, sprites, mermaids, pixies, hobgoblins, brownies, dwarfs, giants, and elves have lived among us since ancient times. Tiny and large winged, horned, tailed, and scaled beings sometimes take human form, and sometimes only borrow human traits. As towns expand and meadows, forests, and marshes recede, their appearance and their names change. This exhibition presents them as they were seen or imagined by people in the first half of the twentieth century.

This part of the permanent collection exhibition is designed as a temporary exhibition, inviting visitors to discover new stories, themes and artists. It will be opened for public until 15 May 2026.
