Tania Mouraud. In Honour of a Reborn Pain

The publication complements the exhibition „In Honour of a Reborn Pain“ by the world-famous French artist Tania Mouraud, which is held at the Vytautas Kasiulis Museum of Art in 2025. Born in Paris in 1942 during the Second World War, Tania Mouraud is one of the most prominent representatives of contemporary art. In a career spanning more than six decades as an artist, she has explored the relationship between the individual and society, the power of language, the consequences of war, ecological crises and collective memory. Her oeuvre, encompassing painting, photography, video art and text-based installations, invites viewers to pause and delve into complex historical themes.

Her work of the past five years, inspired by Litvak culture, has highlighted the connections between the past and the present. In the exhibition catalogue, Mouraud brings the history of Vilnius to life, drawing on the works of Avrom Sutzkever, Rivka Basman, Chaim Grade and other poets who wrote in the Vilnius Ghetto. Her textual installations, in which words are transformed into images, become a challenge: the graphic signs conceal deep meanings, inviting the viewer to engage in the decoding and rethinking of history actively.

Tania Mouraud’s artworks are not only an artistic expression, but also a protest against oblivion, violence and indifference. The exhibition intertwines the memory of the Holocaust, the Litvak cultural heritage and contemporary issues, from the new manifestations of anti-Semitism, the genocide of the Ukrainian people, to the tragedy of climate change.

The richly illustrated catalogue of Tania Mouraud’s first solo exhibition in Lithuania includes texts by Arūnas Gelūnas, Director General of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, Pierre Petit, Cécile Renoult, Matthias Barthel and Tania Mouraud. The publication includes poems by Litvak poets, translated into Lithuanian for the first time.
