The Lithuanian National Museum of Art – among the best European museums
The Lithuanian National Museum of Art (LNMA) has gained an important international recognition by being shortlisted among the eight finalists from fourteen nominees running for the prestigious annual European Museum Academy (EMA) the Art Museum Award 2025.
At the conference and award ceremony held 25-27 September 2025 in Budapest, the LNMA activity was introduced by the Jolanta Marcišauskytė-Jurašienė, deputy director for exhibitions and education of the LNMA, and Dr Lolita Jablonskienė, director of the National Gallery of Art of the LNMA. At the event they shared their experience with the colleagues from all over Europe and took part in professional discussions.
The Lithuanian National Museum of Art was commended by the European community of museums especially for its solid input in supporting Ukraine and for its consistent outreach of museum services to all social segments. From the eight finalists, the Lithuanian National Museum of Art among them, the prize went to the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA).
The shortlisted nominees for the prestigious award included the Centre Pompidou-Metz (France), Reykjavik Art Museum (Iceland), Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro (Montenegro), State Ethnographic Museum (Poland), Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art (Serbia), and Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (United Kingdom).
Being shortlisted among the finalists of the European museums awards is an important acknowledgment of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, and not only for the institution’s contribution to fostering cultural legacy and promoting the love and familiarity of art. The commendation has been merited also by the resolute effort to make the museum easily accessible to diverse social groups and to strengthen the international cooperation.
The European Museum Academy (EMA) is a voluntary community of museum experts from different countries and cultural environments united by their aspiration to develop the knowledge of musicology. The EMA operates on the basis of verified competencies in the design and realization of innovative museum projects. Museums are highly instrumental in solving social, economic and cultural challenges of modern society. The EMA perceives the contemporary museum as a meeting place and a forum for scientific deliberations, creativity, for enhancing social cohesion and cultural dialogue.
The Lithuanian National Museum of Art is one of the largest national art museums in Lithuania accumulating, caring, researching, conserving, and promoting the collection of applied and fine arts, and of cultural history of national significance. The LNMA exhibits at the venues of its nine departments in Vilnius, Klaipėda, Palanga, and Juodkrantė.
