Sacred Motherhood

There is a legend that the first image of the Mother of God was painted by St Luke the Evangelist. That image, continually copied, subsequently spread throughout the Christian world. This session explores how the Mother of God is depicted, which vestments and symbols associated with her image have reached us from the Byzantine period, and why costly revetments were used. The practical component of the session involves creating a mixed-media postcard of the Mother of God with a revetment.

Suitable for pupils in Years 1–12.
