Dainius Liškevičius. Obsessions

21 March – 2 June 2024

What occurs at the attempt to display the museum itself in a museum? To uncover the physical, cultural, and legal structures that highlight the ever-changing narratives of history? It appears that in the exhibition by Dainius Liškevičius such an action spawns many Obsessions – intertwining journeys into the world of objects and resources. Diving into them, we run the risk of encountering something even stranger than art – maybe even our own tender expectations within the void of an empty frame.

It is precisely the historical picture frames, kept in the collections of the Radvila Palace Museum of Art, together with other exhibits and relics of Museum’s activities, that become one of the most important parts of D. Liškevičius’ exhibition. Showcased next to the artist’s collection of photographs and a specially created film, they invite us to think about the margins and paradoxes of history, about the sustainability of culture in a world full of tangible challenges and threats. About the embalmed mummies that are the first to be thrown overboard in the storm of history – and the few irrational traces of life that separate us from them.

Dainius Liškevičius (b. 1970) belongs to the „breakout generation“ of Lithuanian artists who significantly contributed to the renewal of artistic expression after the restoration the country’s sovereignty. In his work, the artist uses installations, photography, performance and other mediums, blurring the boundaries of genres and looking for new forms of contemporary art. The artist has been actively in the art field since 1994, has held personal exhibitions in Lithuania, Poland, the USA, Sweden et al. He represented Lithuania at the 56th Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art with the project „Museum“. In 2021 the artist was awarded the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Prize.
