On the Paths of the Artist Pranas Domšaitis – a publication for the general public about the life and work of the famous expressionist painter Pranas Domšaitis (1880–1965). Born in the village of Kruopynai in East Prussia (now Gajevas, Kaliningrad region), the artist was well known in Europe before World War II and became famous in South Africa after the war. A student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Königsberg, he matured and created in the midst of two cultures – German and Lithuanian – influenced by modern art trends, and became famous as a creator of landscapes and biblical compositions. While living in Germany, he traveled extensively, participated in exhibitions with famous modernists of the time, had his works acquired by museums in the country, and was written about in the cultural press of the time. In the middle of the 20th century, during a period of historical upheaval, Domšaitis’ life took a turn toward South Africa. Living in Cape Town, the artist worked intensively, organized exhibitions, and gained recognition. „I was always on the road,“ were the artist’s last words, describing his turbulent life. P. Domšaitis’ work is unique and distinctive, captivating with its special light and tranquility: enigmatic landscapes, colorful flower compositions, laconic still lifes, portraits of his wife, scenes from the everyday life of ordinary people, biblical scenes full of sacredness and medieval mysticism. The artist, who lived in a world of symbols, left us with a priceless treasure – a large part of his work, which is kept at the Lithuanian National Museum of Art.

 

 

This small publication includes a foreword by Dr. Arūnas Gelūnas, Director General of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, a text by Dr. Jörn Barfod, an expert on the artistic heritage of East Prussia, the most important dates in the artist’s life and work, and illustrations of his most valuable works.

„Auf den Spuren des Malers Pranas Domšaitis“ – das ist eine für die breite Öffentlichkeit bestimmte Publikation über Leben und Werk des berühmten Expressionisten Pranas Domšaitis (1880–1965). Der aus dem ostpreußischen Dorf Kruopynai (heute Gajevo, Gebiet Kaliningrad) stammende Künstler war bis zum Zweiten Weltkrieg in Europa weithin bekannt und erlangte nach dem Krieg Berühmtheit in Südafrika. Als Absolvent der Kunstakademie Königsberg reifte er im Spannungsfeld zweier Kulturen – der deutschen und der litauischen – und schuf unter dem Einfluss moderner Kunstströmungen. Er war vor allem als Schöpfer von Landschaften und biblischen Kompositionen bekannt.

 

Während seines Lebens in Deutschland unternahm er zahlreiche Reisen, nahm an Ausstellungen mit namhaften Modernisten jener Zeit teil. Seine Werke wurden von Museen angekauft, und auch die damalige Kulturpresse berichtete über ihn. Mitte des 20. Jh. führten historische Umbrüche P. Domšaitis nach Südafrika. In Kapstadt arbeitete er intensiv, organisierte Ausstellungen und erlangte dort Anerkennung. „Ich war immer unterwegs“ – so lauteten die letzten Worte des Künstlers, die sein ruheloses Leben charakterisieren.

 

Das Werk von P. Domšaitis ist einzigartig und unverwechselbar. Es besticht durch besonderes Licht und Ruhe: geheimnisvolle Landschaften, farbenprächtige Blumenkompositionen, lakonische Stillleben, Porträts seiner Frau, Szenen aus dem Alltag einfacher Menschen sowie biblische Sujets voller Sakralität und durchdrungen von mittelalterlicher Mystik. Der Künstler, der in einer Welt der Symbole lebte, hinterließ uns ein unschätzbares Erbe – einen bedeutenden Teil seines Schaffens, das im Litauischen Nationalen Kunstmuseum aufbewahrt wird.

 

Diese Publikation enthält ein Vorwort des Generaldirektors des Museums, Dr. Arūnas Gelūnas, einen Beitrag des Ostpreußen-Kunstkenners Dr. Jörn Barfod, die wichtigsten Daten aus dem Leben und Schaffen des Künstlers sowie Abbildungen der bedeutendsten Werke.
