The 4th International Exhibition of Small-Form Ceramics “A Cup 2023”

13 December 2023 – 25 February 2024

On December 13, the 4th international exhibition of small-form ceramics “A Cup 2023” opens its doors to visitors in the Museum of Applied Arts and Design. This year, the event has gathered 52 artists from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Ukraine, and Brazil. The works for the exhibition have been submitted not only by seasoned experts in their field, winners of various local and international events well-known to the audience of ceramics art but also by emerging artists – students of Vilnius Academy of Arts – at the start of their career.

The theme of a small cup reminiscent of the concept of Japanese haiku may seem fairly simple at first glance: short, moderate lines having to encompass a concentrated idea, image, and emotional depth. A cup – one of the most universal vessels in applied arts – turns into a creative miniature used both as a functional element of everyday life and interior design and as a sculptural object and a poetical metaphor. Playful interpretations of the artists, artistic experiments combine tradition with contemporary art.

The sphere of ceramics is inseparable from a complex technological base. Along with the artworks of noble bone china the exhibition also houses the works of rough fireclay, stoneware, brown and white clay produced with the help of archaic leaven, oriental Raku, anagama, wood or electric firing techniques. Thus, viewers have a great opportunity to explore a broad panorama of contemporary ceramics full various specific features, styles, genres, and techniques characteristic of different generations in just one small exhibition.

The exhibition is open until 25 February 2024.
