Algirdas Bosas. Halfway

19 April – 1 September 2024

Halfway is an exhibition about looking at and understanding sculpture. Sculptor Algirdas Bosas reconsiders time as an element of the process that is taking place right now and the course of actions that have already happened (been archived). It is a retrospective look at the author‘s creative and personal path, choices, hesitations, and certain feelings. The exhibition consists of sculptures and sketches created between 1975 and 2024, as well as photographs documenting monuments in public spaces.

Algirdas Bosas has been consistent in his oeuvre spanning five decades. In the words of art historian Elona Lubytė, „[his work] is characterized by a post-romanticist approach to nature, universal human nature, and historical memory“. The artist bears witness to the changing political and social transformations. Reflecting on modernism and postmodernism, he combines the past and the present in a unique way. Scale, form, and the relationship of the object to its surroundings are perhaps the most important elements in his artworks. Abstract silhouettes are combined with associative details, revealing the idea in a suggestive and impactful way.

Algirdas Bosas (born 1943) graduated in sculpture from the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 1972. From 1972 to 1974 he worked as a teacher at the Panevėžys Art School, and later, from 1992 to 2006, at the Klaipėda Eduardas Balsys Art Gymnasium. He has participated in exhibitions since 1973. In 2000 Bosas was awarded the Golden Badge of the Lithuanian Artists’ Union, and in 2016, he received the Golden Badge of Samogitians. In 2011, the sculptor was awarded the Culture and Art Prize by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania. In 2018, he was awarded the title of Klaipėda Master of Culture. Algirdas Bosas lives and works in Gargždai.
